In the ‘Advisory Board Business Cases’ series we hear from Advisory Board Professionals about how they’ve supported organisations at the board level. What led to the board being formed? What were the push and pull factors? How was the advisory board strategy shaped? And ultimately, what impact did it have? Short and sharp, the case studies show how advisory skillsets are being deployed across a variety of sectors, and offer valuable insights for those learning and growing in the advisory profession.

Ari Magalhaes is an Economist and transformation & turnaround specialist, particularly in the health, energy and human services sectors. Hailing from Brazil, she has worked across South America, Europe, and Australia.

In this conversation with Penny Ellenger, General Manager – Engagement at the Advisory Board Centre, Ari discusses her role working with a well-established non-profit organisation in the disability services space.

The organisation’s challenge was clear: financial challenges meant it needed to diversify its funding strategy so it wasn’t relying on a single source of revenue. But was the most effective approach? Ari was engaged in an advisory capacity to 1) assess the financial sustainability of the organisation and 2) address its risk exposure, which had increased due to numerous regulatory changes and increased regulatory scrutiny in the disability services sector.

Working alongside the Chief Executive Officer, Chief Operating Officer and Chief Financial Officer, Ari was engaged over an 18 month period, culminating in the organisation deciding to diversify their strategy into the Aged Care sector.

Watch the conversation with Ari below for insights to the advisory approach:

  • Understanding the business internally via a business diagnostic
  • Examining potential growth markets
  • Developing a growth strategy and 12-month roadmap to establish the foundations they need to effectively enter the Aged Care space
  • Reinforcing the value of two key best practice principles from the ABF 101 Best Practice Framework™: 1) Clarity of Scope (the advisory board has a clearly articulated purpose and intended impact) and 2) Structure & Discipline (the advisory board’s structure and management protocols are clearly outlined to establish, manage and review effectiveness)

Dive in to this well-honed and well-executed advisory engagement!
